Positive: For over 50 years, I have driven past this place on my way to visit family in Lamar. Every trip, there it was—a familiar landmark along the highway. Yet somehow, all those years, I never stopped to learn its story. A few days ago, that changed. What I expected was a quiet cabin getaway. What I found was a place filled with history, character, and heart. I stayed in the old coaches' cabin, a cozy rustic cabin with exposed rafters, vintage-style fans, original hardwood floors that creak beneath your feet, an original rock foundation, and a charming stone pathway leading to the door. This isn't the Ritz. It's something better. It's authentic. If you're looking for marble floors and luxury amenities, this may not be your place. But if you're looking for peace, history, character, and a genuine connection to the past, you'll be hard-pressed to find anything richer. During my stay, I met Lynna, one of the owners, who shared a little of the property's history. Learning that this remains a family business made the experience even more meaningful. You can see the care and pride that has gone into preserving what makes this place special. The more I learned, the more fascinated I became. I found myself researching Mickey Owen, who founded the camp in 1959, and discovering that future stars such as Michael Jordan and Charlie Sheen once attended camps here. Everywhere you look there are reminders of the camp's history—old baseball gloves, photographs, memorabilia, and stories waiting to be discovered. The on-site restaurant, housed in the original dining hall, is worth visiting on its own. The original wood milled on the property remains, as does the old green chalkboard on the wall. Surrounded by photographs of campers from decades past, I felt like I had stepped into a living piece of Missouri history. The burger and fries were fantastic—and enormous!

Negative: Honestly, very little. This is a rustic historic property, so if someone is expecting a luxury resort experience, they may be disappointed. But that isn't what this place is trying to be. The rustic charm, history, and authenticity are exactly what make it special. Renovations are still ongoing in some areas, but I actually enjoyed seeing the care and effort being put into preserving and improving the property. If anything, it made me excited to see how it continues to evolve. Other than having to leave, I really don't have any complaints. Please, don't let the renovations scare you away. I was there during the week and never heard anything.
